the pianos at Kings Cross St Pancras

I am inspired by the pianos at Kings Cross St Pancras station.

I walk through both adjacent stations on my way to and from work and the architecture and design of their refurbishment never ceases to inspire and uplift my spirit. They are truly magnificent, a marvellous gateway to London and contribute to my pride in our capital.

They are just happening places in every season. Around Remembrance Sunday time there is a huge poppy and brass band in Kings Cross; there are frequent choirs and impromptu performances at the exit of the Eurostar. The shops and cafes are full of interesting people and it has a real pavement café vibe.

Outside Kings Cross there are the black granite slab seats and lots of gazebos throughout the year with farmers’ markets or other promotions. I saw Gary Lineker promoting obscure ice creams there once.

I love all of it. I have been in the champagne bar twice. But I particularly love the pianos. Whoever brainstormed them in to existence was a genius. The most extraordinary range of people come and play them, all nationalities, all ages, the very old and the very young, eccentrics, students, businessmen. I have lost count of the times I spend pretending to look in the shop window and miss my train because I am captivated by some remarkable fingers dancing across the keys. It is magical, emotionally moving and inspiring.

To spend a night in the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel is on my bucket list.
