Mazi Mas roaming restaurant

I travelled all the way from Luton to visit the Mazi Mas roaming restaurant at the Ovalhouse Theatre, south London. This is not quite true. I was in London in attendance at an Easter Bonnet Parade on one of our estates and went there afterwards. The parade was poorly attended even though the weather was not too bad and they had a delightful steel band whose music carried over the entire estate, not to mention free refreshments, free face painting, free manicures. Why do so few people come out of their houses with their little children?

I came across Mazi Mas at the Women’s Environmental Network Event in Tower Hamlets.https://hazeldurbridge.com/winter-gathering-tower-hamlets-food-growing-network/

The photography on their website makes it. www.Mazimas.co.uk

‘Mazi Mas is a social enterprise dedicated to supporting women from migrant and refugee communities. We provide opportunities for women who aspire to careers in the food industry to gain paid work experience, develop their skills, tell their stories and connect with the wider public.

We cook the kind of food we love to eat; simple, full of flavour, and rooted in rich cultural traditions’.

So what did we eat?

The chef was a Brazilian called Roberta Siao.

We started with a sharing platter of muhammarah, babah ganoush and borek which was two dips, one of red pepper and walnut, one with youghurt & garlic and a spinach and feta sort of slice. Then we had Brazilian cheese bread freshly cooked. I may not have described all the ingredients correctly, but they looked good, very colourful and tasted even better.

For mains we had Fish Mocqueca with coconut milk, coriander and lime served with sour bread and finished off with passion fruit mousse. For me it was pretty much orgasm on the tongue.

Of course to enjoy it you have to be prepared to put things in your mouth that you are clueless about.

Mazi Mas is at the Ovalhouse SE11 5SW Tuesday – Saturday 6-10pm until 30 May 2015.
