A letter to a 10 year old me

I am going to start commenting on other people’s blogs. This is a close friend of mine, but I love it.  It’s so powerful – the anger, the insightfulness, the sardonic humour.  His posts develop in eloquence as he ages.

What would I say to a 10 year old me looking out of the window of that council house in Yorkshire?

Life is going to be so much more exciting than you have ever dreamed possible.

You are going to have a lot of boyfriends, many extraordinarily handsome and gifted ones, although you think you are ugly.

You are going to see more of the world than many born in your circumstances.

Surprisingly you are not going to stay in touch with any of your school friends. I don’t know quite why this is – perhaps because you truly want to shut the door on the boredom and limitations of your youth.  It was never cruel – it was just so limited.

Having your dad die on you is going to impact hugely on your life.

Learning from your Mum’s ability to ‘cope’ and the lack of money in your youth will stand you in good stead when your husband leaves you in your 40s.

She/ you were gifted resilience. It will bless you.

As you age you will learn to be grateful for your lot and that will keep you happy.
