I am at my best at work and home when …
I am at my best
At work when
I have an idea and I am full of hope.
There are children and/or young people around
I have to find ways through things / work at new solutions. Then I get all buzzy and excited.
Go back to my family at the end of the day
Not be constrained absolutely by time – e.g. teaching hours and weeks. Flexibility to start later, work at week-ends etc.
Given responsibility for a large project that I have to organise
Managing people was a passion, but not so much now. I came across too many people with too much self interest
When my children were little, it used to matter that I was with people who I could socialise with outside of work, but this doesn’t matter now
No silly rules such as children not wearing ear rings or short skirts or not being allowed to customise your personal space though I appreciate that sharing desks is the way of the future.
I am being asked to do something I believe in (I found one school I worked in really difficult because they didn’t focus on getting kids to read and write but taught through cross thematic projects, even at secondary level.)
Being with like minded people who have even better ideas than you is inspiring.
Having 1:1s where people believe in you and are interested in what you have to say and make you think about how you could do it better.
Helping ordinary people better their lives.
Every day is different.
It’s not just about being sat at a desk.
Working at a place with natural light where you can see out the window.
Working with people from all different cultures and beliefs and different ages
Working with great thinkers who have original ideas even if they are wacky and bonkers at times. This has mainly happened with jobs based in London.
Being able to see different people and different things all the time. I liked working at the EC1 festival and helping out at the dog show. I like just being a bit anonymous around people and being able to watch them. I’m interested in how they are different from me.
At home
When I can spend time outside doing physical things to make things look nicer or to grow things
I am achieving things and ticking them off my mental list
I am being creative in how I do things and how I make them look
Travelling with small groups of people with at least one person I love
I eat freshly prepared food in moderate quantities regularly and not late at night
I have access to nice red wine or champagne
There are animals and/or children
Being in warm climates with lots of open space and water – lakes, rivers, the sea, a forest with flowers on the ground
Wearing expensive clothes in natural fabrics like cashmere, silk, linen and cotton.
People are talking about things or experiences I don’t know much about
I see friends regularly who I care about and to whom I can talk about how I am really feeling and I know they care for me
In my dreams where I can dance beautifully.
