Was I a crime victim of the Fox?

I wonder sometimes how much crime an ordinary person should expect on average in a lifetime.

I think I have experienced a lot and I don’t think I stand out in any way or put myself in situations where I am vulnerable if I can avoid it.

This week I have had to deal with a speeding ticket because the people who stole my number plates went through a camera in the middle of Luton as if they were driving on the motor way. To begin with I opened the letter and did not even read it properly.  I was too upset as I had been caught for speeding and knew that a second offence within a three year period would mean points on my license.  When I sat down to deal with it, first of all I realised the speed was way beyond what I would normally drive ever and then that it was the day I had my number plates stolen and I could prove I was working in London at the time.  Of course I had to ring up and write emails, but it was confirmed it was not my car.

I was reminded of the time I was potentially visited by the ‘Fox’ way back before I was married when I was living in a flat on my own in Luton. The Fox was on a rampage at the time entering houses and doing bad things to people he found there.

One morning I opened my door which did not have a spy hole or a security chain to a man in a balaclava holding a knife. When I was young and found myself in dangerous situations I seemed to have incredible presence of mind.  I grabbed both of his wrists and started yelling.  I am not sure if anyone was around, but it scared him enough to pull away and run off.

When I stopped quivering, remembering there was no phone in the flat and no mobiles at this time, I went to a phone box and rang my husband to be who told me to ring the police. They were round in double quick time and treated it very seriously.  I remember my case being discussed on the radio.

The Fox was mentioned and I remember saying, ‘Oh it couldn’t possibly be him. He wasn’t a big man and obviously not that strong if I could fight him off’.  They looked at me strangely and said nothing.

The man eventually prosecuted as the Fox was 5’ 8’’ and slim build.
