I get burgled again
I got burgled again. It is less than a year since the last time, but I am sure it is not the same person. They were so neat. They neatly removed and replaced a stack of bricks to gain height to access the window, and once they had forced the window, neatly removed all the articles on the windowsill and left them on the ground outside.
They came in through the same window as last time in spite of the fact I had three window locks on it. If you remember, I couldn’t claim on my insurance last time because I didn’t have window locks on this particular window.
They also came in the morning between 6.30am when I came downstairs for a cup of tea and 7.30am when I came down for breakfast. I was on the phone to my daughter. I think they climbed in, walked up the stairs as they left mud on the carpet, heard voices and went away again. Nothing was disturbed. There appears to be nothing stolen.
Of course I am totally freaked out by it. I was in the house on my own at the time. I had to go in every room in fear and trepidation that I would find them still there.
I rang the police. They were better than last time I was burgled. The women who answered the phone told me to cover all footprints with trays. They sent round forensics the same morning and the police came to interview me in the afternoon.
The problem was I couldn’t find any handyperson, builder, local contact who was not too busy to come out and make safe the window. In the end, when I had got over the main swamp of fear and distress in my head I did it myself.
The experts suggest CCTV, alarms, new windows. Where is the money supposed to come from? I should put a sign up at the window. ‘I have nothing left to steal. The insurers would not pay up last time so nothing of value was replaced. Give me a break.’
